The motivation for this project were the results of a qualitative based research conducted in a basic health service at the city of João Pessoa/PB - Brazil. Interviews with the professional of health revealed their difficulties to recognize and deal with the violence in the context of their attending. The research concluded that the professional practices did not meet the public health policies related to women health and that the violence against women is almost invisible in the health system due to the lack of notification and registry of cases.

The approach of the serious game was directed to the facing of the problem of violence against women with focus on the capacity building for professionals of the health system..

Concepts of the game Caixa de Pandora.

Since it is a complex problem, was observed that the learning domains to be approached by the game included both cognitive and affective domains. Other feature important of the game is its constructivist approach of the problem. Thus, the game invites the player to think about the problem from the observation of Marta, a woman character that is victim of violence by her partner, when she request attending in the health system.

The game is composed by 3 levels:

  • the childhood of Marta,
  • the adult life of Marta (living with a partner)
  • when Marta looks for health assistance.

Each level presents individually or combined the concepts of genre, human rights and health. The player behaviour and reactions (verified by their answers) are monitored using a model based on Psychometry developed by LabTEVE. Thus, from their level of comprehension, the player can be invited to continue in the game, and advance for next levels, or to play again and restart helping Marta to open the Pandora's Box.

The game was evaluated and validated in the health system of João Pessoa (Paraí/Brazil) with professionals of the Units of Heath Family. The game Caixa de Pandora is a free software registered in the National Institute of Industrial Property (inpi.org.br) and is freely available for download.
