Collaborative and Imersive Virtual Environments for Medicine

    The benefits of haptic systems can be observed in situations in which the comprehension of a problem depends on or are complemented by tactile sensations of objects or scenes. Touch and manual dexterity to perform procedures are also factors that have promoted the development of techniques and processes involving haptics. The present project is inserted in the context of collaborative virtual environments and systems for distance learning of the National Institutes of Science and Technology - Medicine Assisted by Scientific Computing / INCT-MACC.

    LabTEVE group intends to research new methodologies to incorporate haptic devices in collaborative systems for medical activities and related distance to learning. The main idea is to evaluate the benefits related to haptics in activities dependent on touch, as exchange of medical opinions and learning.

    Specific objectives are:

  • Investigate performance of haptic applications in network when an user guides remote devices;
  • Investigate performance of monitoring related to haptic applications;
  • Investigate performance of haptic systems when users share a same haptic environment;
  • Use CyberMed, recently developed by the research group of LabTEVE to evaluate the use of haptic systems in multi-modal collaboractive applications. It means activities that integrate visualization, interactive deformation, stereoscopy and other features present in a virtual reality system;
  • Develop collaborative haptic applications for tests of teaching using medical simulators.
