AminoViewer

Augmented Reality to Improve Biochemistry Learning

The AminoViewer project started from a colaboration betwen two laboratories of the Federal University of Paraiba: the Laboratory of Technologies for Virtual Teaching and Statistics (LabTEVE), and the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Experimental Biochemistry (LAFABE). The objective was to improve the traditional experience with materials about biochemistry by the use of augmented reality. This way, was intended to allow students to interact with the content in a 3D context.

The AminoViewer is a didatic tool that uses the association of a book and an appplication to improve the assimilation of knowledge about the structure and funtion of amino acids. This subject is commonly presented in biochemistry classes in undergraduation courses. The book presents 20 amino acids, their two dimensional structures, chemical characteristics, biological functions and structural formula. For each amino acid there is an image of its structural formula that leads to its corresponding 3D molecula when the AminoViwer3D app is used. By this augmented reality resource, the student can interact the molecula in space, exploring its features.
